El estudio afirma que este fuerte respaldo representa un cambio radical respecto a su actuación durante las primarias “cuando perdió el voto latino frente a Hillary Rodham Clinton por una relación cercana de 2 a 1, lo que había despertado especulaciones en algunos sectores de que los hispanos no estaban inclinados a votar por un candidato negro”.

La encuesta también ha revelado que 65% de los votantes latinos están identificados, o tienen preferencias, por el partido demócrata actualmente, en comparación con el 26% que se inclina por el partido republicano.

En 2004, el actual presidente George W. Bush obtuvo casi el 40% del voto hispano, un récord para el partido republicano. Pero desde entonces, las encuestas de opinión muestran que la posición republicana frente a los latinos se ha visto afectada por el debate nacional sobre la reforma de inmigración.

“The walls between old allies on either side of the Atlantic cannot stand,” Obama said, speaking not far from where the Berlin Wall once divided the city.

“The walls between the countries with the most and those with the least cannot stand. The walls between races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christians and Muslims and Jews cannot stand,” he said.

Obama said he was speaking as a citizen, not as a president, but the evening was awash in politics. His remarks inevitably invited comparison to historic speeches in the same city by Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, and he borrowed rhetoric from his own appeals to campaign audiences in the likes of Berlin, N.H., when he addressed a crowd in one of the great cities of Europe.

Just when McCain had Obama on the defensive over the Democrat’s plan to surrender after we’ve won in Iraq, Maliki has made McCain look the naïf for opposing a timetable for withdrawal.

Unless McCain changes his approach, he’s lost the use of this issue. He can’t come out for staying in Iraq longer than the government we support wants.

The Republican needs to shift the debate to Iraq’s future. Neither Obama’s belaboring of his previous opposition to the war nor McCain’s attacking the Democrat’s opposition to the surge is relevant — both lines are history lessons best left in the classroom. What voters want to know is, What now?

McCain needs to hammer at one basic theme: that Obama’s pullout plan will lead to a third Iraq war. The Democrat wants to keep substantial numbers of troops next door, to go back into Iraq if necessary. McCain should stress that a premature withdrawal will lead to a collapse — losing the hard-won stability in Iraq, opening the door to an Iranian takeover and al-Qaida revival, and potentially forcing a new U.S. invasion.

Obama isn’t a peace candidate, McCain can say, just an advocate of a deferred war. Just as the first President George Bush left the ingredients in place for a second war when he failed to depose Saddam Hussein in 1991, so Obama will fail to finish the job and invite yet another war if he abandons Iraq before our gains have been consolidated.

With U.N. officials predicting Karadzic would be handed to the war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in the next week, an attorney said the prisoner would handle his own defense, just like his former mentor, the late Yugoslav strongman Slobodan Milosevic, who died in 2006 while on trial.

Karadzic will do it looking like his old self, without the bushy white beard and long gray hair that hid his face when he was arrested by Serbian authorities, his lawyer, Sveta Vujacic, said. Karadzic asked for and got a shave and a haircut.

“He looks like new, exactly the same, only 14 years older,” Vujacic said.

Since the arrest was announced Monday, Serbs have been intrigued by how Karadzic transformed himself from a flashy suit-and-tie politician into a long-haired health guru living openly in their midst while being sought for alleged crimes during Bosnia’s 1992-95 ethnic bloodletting.

“His new life was fascinating. He hid in the open,” said criminologist Leposava Kron.

The metamorphosis was so complete that many of Karadzic’s neighbors said they were struggling to comprehend how the friendly man they knew as “Dr. Dragan David Dabic” was one of the world’s most-wanted fugitives.

Belgrade media said Wednesday that the alias was taken from a Bosnian Serb who died in Bosnia’s capital in 1993 during the war.

Karadzic had a girlfriend named Mila whom he presented as an associate in his alternative medicine business, said Zoran Pavlovic, a software engineer who says he was hired in February to set up a Web site for the “Dabic” to advertise his expertise in “human quantum energy.”

“It appears that the one area where McCain may be able to gain traction in New Jersey is if he can make the campaign a referendum on Obama’s personal judgment,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute. “At this time, though, that appears to be a slim hope. Everything else on the electoral horizon benefits the Democrat.”
