The Jersey Journal: Vega’s got a big problem and a small political future

The Jersey Journal becomes L’Ami du peuple and calls for the head of Sal Vega! Advices the West New York Comité de Salut Public to bring the Guillotine!

‘In this form of government, the mayor is nothing more than another commissioner who is voted to the title by the other members of the panel. A small coup, forcing another vote for mayor, would replace Vega and relegate him to whatever department the others see fit to give him.’

West New York had pure drama this past week and it is worth reviewing what happened. It was more like the famous scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Foreign Correspondent” than Jacque Demy’s “Umbrellas of Cherbourg” – more sinister than romantic.

Walking down an incline on West New York’s 57th Street toward the Middle School near Broadway, there was a small sea of mostly dark-colored umbrellas, hundreds of them, all wet, glistening and bobbing.

‘Even more ominous for Vega is that many in the crowd, from glass towers on Boulevard East to small homes west of Bergenline Avenue, were exchanging names and phone numbers. These people were planning to organize against what they see as a common enemy.’

In Hitchcock’s movie, one of many umbrellas in a rainy scene hid an assassin.

In West New York, every umbrella covered one or two people who probably had assassination in their hearts. This crowd was intense and angry. In front of them at the main entrance, at times there were as many as a dozen police officers keeping an eye on them behind metal and wood barriers.

The crowd was a mix of English-and Spanish-speaking residents. All had hoped to gain entrance to a 7 p.m. city Board of Commissioners meeting that had been moved to the school because of the expected large crowds. By about 6:20 p.m., no more people were allowed to enter and even 57th Street was barricaded.

‘After this week, Dr. Felix Roque, a local physician who plans to run against Vega, already looks like a favorite – about three years from now.’

Some in the wet crowd complained that the target of their wrath, Mayor Silverio “Sal” Vega, had called teacher friends to come early and take up seats in the meeting hall. True or not, they believed it – based on past experiences in City Hall when during controversial sessions more than the usual number of town employees have been seated in the court chambers, which are regularly used for commission sessions.
